Winter 2023

Ypelaar is a serious game in the form of a pixel-art visual novel. It tells the story of the minor seminary IJpelaar that existed from 1878 until 1969. The Sint Joost academy is currently located in the same building in which the seminary existed, so as a student from Sint Joost I was very interested in the history of the monastery.

The game leads the player through the monastery in the form of a visual novel (text-based) game. As the player you can talk to different characters in the seminary, who will tell you about the different stories that took place inside and around the building. You can travel to different locations with the use of an interactive map and you can collect items that are given to the player after talking with the residents of the seminary. The main goal of the game is to educate the player about the history of the building.

This project was developed during my sixth period at Sint Joost together with Laura Rijnen. We used Aseprite for the pixel-art and Ren’Py for the programming. Unfortunately, the game was never finished.
